The Zero-Click Future – AI Gets Them in the Door, But Humans Keep Them There

In the financial sector, we’re seeing an arms race to implement AI for customer acquisition. But what happens after acquiring that AI-led customer? The real competitive advantage in a zero-click world isn’t showing up in an AI agent’s recommendation; it’s what happens the moment the customer arrives. Leaders should be asking: are we investing as heavily in the loyalty experience as we are in AI-driven acquisition? And if brand loyalty is now the last defensible moat in financial services, are we treating it with the strategic urgency it deserves?

WHY DOES IS MATTER?

If AI handles discovery and selection, the moment a real customer walks through the door (digitally or physically) they’ve already been pre-sold on a product. What they haven’t been sold on yet is you. Gartner research confirms that in AI-shaped feeds and agentic buying experiences, brands increasingly win or lose based on trust signals like advocacy, consistency, and expert proof. And that 80% of affluent households are still willing to pay a premium for human advice over an exclusively digital service. The brands that will win long-term are not the ones that game the algorithm; they’re the ones that make the human experience so compelling that customers never want to leave.

The magic is in the experience.

WHAT DOES REGROUP THINK?

AI can win the first transaction. Only humans can win the relationship. Leaders should be taking steps to invest in experiences that keep customers coming back. Brand trust is how you create, so strategically planning, creating, nurturing and refining trust will build relationships for the long-term. Successful brands will ensure that the existing customer experience gets just as much attention as the new customer journey.

So one can argue that your biggest growth opportunity does not lie with acquisition, but in retention and driving increase wallet share.

So, where can you interject HUMAN touch-points essential to let youwin? Is it at your branch? Is it digitally? Is it outside of your core business? What is your competitive advantage?

I would argue that financial services institutions have more data about a person than most brands. Utilizing that data to poivide personalized service is the secret to nurturing your one time AI customer into a lifetime partner.

I would love to hear about what you are doing to drive growth through brand loyalty.

Cheers!

REGROUP’S ROOTS RUN DEEP

Janet Muhleman co-founded Group 243 in Ann Arbor in 1975. Since then, her agency’s innovative holistic customer experience perspective drew the attention of clients and national and international agency holding companies alike.

By the time Jan and her veteran leadership team decided to buy back their independence in 2003, the agency had embedded additional DNA from some of the top agencies in the industry: including Omnicom and WPP. REGROUP’s founding that year allowed the team to tightly re-integrate their offerings around their long-standing customer experience approach and select opportunities based on a match of values and commitment to mutual growth. Those criteria remain today.

Throughout its history, REGROUP has remained independent and committed to using business as a force for good. We continue to help complex organizations align internally and externally through our brand + performance philosophy.
